Intermountain West and Pacific Northwest wildfires are affecting local air quality. If smoke is thick or becomes noticeably thicker in your area you should remain indoors or if possible seek out locations where air is filtered. Unusually sensitive people throughout the region should consider reducing prolonged or heavy exertion.

The County Clerk has been notified that Durango School District 9-R will be participating in the coordinated election in November.  The Board of Education will have three four-year seats up for election --- District A (currently filled by Nancy Stubbs), District C (currently filled by Kim Martin), and District E (previously filled by Andy Burns).

Durango School District 9-R has several great career opportunities that include full benefits, vacation and sick days, part-time options and, in many cases, summer off. For example, we are currently seeking part-time cooks to assist with our breakfast and lunch programs in the school.

The Colorado Department of Education is announcing the policy for free and reduced price meals for children unable to pay the full price served in schools under the National School Lunch Program, the School Breakfast Program and/or the Special Milk Program.

We wanted to inform our families about a community meeting that will be held tonight regarding the Lightner Creek Fire. The county emergency manager and members from the Type II Emergency Management Team will provide updates on the fire, evacuation and pre-evacuation notices and address community concerns around the fire. The meeting will begin at 5:00 pm at Escalante Middle School, located at 141 Baker Lane, Durango, CO 81301.

San Juan Basin Public Health recently released the results from the research conducted through attendees at the Suicide Prevention Community Summit held at Miller Middle School on May 11, 2017.
